BCM215 BETA

So this semester I was very unmotivated to continue with any work within this digital artefact, the main reason as to why is because I honestly hate gaming, I am not someone who wants to sit down and play video games for hours on end, nothing against those people who do that, but I just do not think it is entertaining.

However, I have found enjoyment in playing some games, mainly the games in which mirror the concept of Paidia (playfulness), which is when there are no rules to follow and you are able to create your own adventure within the game. The funny thing is, I have only been able to play video games on the PS4 which revolved around the concept of Ludus (formality) as I do not own my own PS4 and have to borrow from my friend, but don’t get me wrong I am actually having fun!

Something that I have struggled with throughout this semester is posting on reddit and twitter, I am not overly active on reddit as I am still unaware of how to use it, however, I am learning and have started posting different comments based on he games I have been playing. Despite not having any motivation to continue to post on reddit, I am going to continue to keep posting and gaining audience for my youtube videos!

As stated within my youtube video, I am basing my Digital Artefact of ‘I’M NOT A GAMER GIRL’ around the analytical framework of ‘the relationship between humans and games’. I cam across this framework after research Roger Caillios, and his 1961 book ‘Man, Play, Games’ which we reviewed in lecture three, he asks about his system of how to classify different games; Agon (competition), Alea (chance), Mimicry (simulation) and Ilinx (chaos). And how they are plotted on the spectrum between two poles, Paidia (playfulness) and Ludus (formality), basically this has allowed my analyse and progress to define how I play certain video games and how I react while playing certain video games as I do not have muscle memory when it comes to the controllers and how I am someone who does not fully understand how to play a video game without having instructions.

  1. Hi Charlotte! Following on from your pitch, I think your new idea has a lot of potential, especially when talking about analytical frameworks. It’s great seeing how much iteration your project has gone through since the beginning. This definitely is a good indication that you are learning new information!

Using Roger Caillios’s system for analysing games as your analytical framework sounds like a great idea. Although you mentioned that you will be looking at games and whether they are a “free-to-play” or “story mode” type game, I think It would be a good idea to talk more about why you are doing that. You should look into the differences and similarities between the different styles. For example, are free-to-play games all similar? What game elements are common between them? How do you feel about the visuals, controls, sound etc.

This research paper by Richard T.A talks about “main structural characteristics of video game playing” which might help you out a little bit https://www.liebertpub.com/doi/abs/10.1089/109493104322820057

Another suggestion I think may benefit this digital artefact is the creation of blog posts after you play a game to reflect on your game experience. You can write about how it made you feel, the pros and cons of the game and especially a place to discuss your analytical framework.

Keep up the great work and I am excited to see where this goes.
